[Watch] Florida Woman Brutally Attacked By Five Bears Outside Her Home
A Florida woman goes into graphic detail after a near death experience involving five black bears over the weekend. She described the terrifying experience, including the horrific moment she heard the bear’s jaw clamp down on her skull. This woman is lucky to be alive after such an encounter.
Terri Frana, 44, suffered multiple wounds all over her body, ranging from her thighs to her head. After all is said and done, she has 30 staples in her scalp and 10 stitches in her forehead along with multiple claw marks and scratches.
Reports of people coming into contact with black bears in central Florida have more than doubled in the last five years, with numbers in 2009 at about a thousand to more than 2,200 just last year. In an interview with NBC’s Today Show, Frana stated, “Unfortunately, we just got too comfortable with them being around.”
The terrified mother said she had just stepped outside of their Lake Mary home on Saturday evening to check on her children who were out riding bikes, when she saw the five black bears digging through her trash in her garage. Frana said the bears reacted too fast for her and was mauled by them moments later. As she was being attacked she remembers pleading for help, screaming, “Please, my kids need me.”
Frana told the Today Show that she is still shaken up, stating, “I can’t close my eyes and not think about it, see it, feel it, but that will go away in time and I’m here. I’m here for my kids.”
She goes on to tell what happened during the initial moments of the attack, “I saw this large bear charging at me. She opened her jaw and clamped down onto my head, and I could just hear her teeth marks going through my scalp.”
Frana said during the whole attack, all that she could think about was her kids. After what seemed like forever, Frana was able to escape the bears and drag herself back into her home where her 15-year-old son, Drew, called 911.
Frana’s husband, Frank, told MyFoxOrlando.com, “One of the bears stood up, knocked her down, and started to maul her. The bear actually had my wifes head in its mouth and started to drag her towards the woods.” Frank Frana did say he was lucky he still had his wife with him after the attack.
Lake Mary, Florida is just north of Orlando and happens to be only ten miles from another bear mauling where a woman was attacked while walking her dogs.
Florida Fish and Wildlife officials are searching for the 200 lb. bear that attacked Frana this past Saturday. Traps have been placed all over the Carisbrooke subdivision in hopes to capture the animals before they have the chance to do this again.
Bay News9 reported that on Sunday, officials had shot a black bear that was aggressive toward them near the area of the latest attack. Three other bears were captured, while two ran away.
According to wildlife officials, this is the time of year that bears will head out scavenging for food, and that people should remain aware of their surroundings.
