She Lost Her Job Over This Photo; Find out Why

Laraine-Cook

Lorraine Cook found out the hard way that Pocatello High School in Idaho doesn’t understand the difference between staff vacation time and work. Cook posted a harmless photo of her with her boyfriend from their vacation to her personal FaceBook page over summer, only to have it resurface later in the hands of her employer. Cook was up until recently, the girl’s basketball coach at the school; they subsequently fired her over this depiction of two consenting adults on a trip.

Parents at the school rallied in support of Cook to have her job reinstated, but the district hasn’t budged. The kicker? Her boyfriend in the photo is Tom Harrison, head football coach at the same school Cook was fired from. Harrison didn’t lose his job though, he was only reprimanded for the photo.

Pocatello, you’ve got some explaining to do for your blatant double standard here. While Mr. Harrison doesn’t deserve treatment equal to the obvious sham you just pulled on Ms. Cook, Lorraine deserves nothing less than the treatment her boyfriend received.  I’m happy to report that Lorraine has hired an attorney in this matter, it’s too bad that funding that could have went to pay this coach to keep doing her job will now be spent fighting her in court because the district couldn’t mind their own business.

Rip this school board a new one ms cook. Your private life is exactly that. . The government might think they have the right to intrude into our lives. .. but employers. .. gov’t or not. .. doesn’t.

  • Deborah

She should still have her job just like her boyfriend. He was the one that had his hand on her boob so if anyone should have gotten fired would have been him. But they were on vacation for heaven sakes. They were on their own time and should be allowed to enjoy their vacation the way they see fit. She has that right. What is this world coming to that you can’t do what you want on your vacation,

  • ksh21e

Not only the fact that they’re intruding, but the BLATANT double standard is outrageous. What? Was he winning games and she wasn’t? Maybe that was the true motive for her firing? Yep, they’re gonna pay through the nose on this one.

  • John Vermore

If the school had a “morality clause” in their contracts, I could see punishing both. There is not possible excuse for the double standard however.

  • http://Askwhy.us/ M. Chris Ritchie

Shameful! The school has NO RIGHT to interfere or judge someone on what they do in their private life. Facebook is over used and to many people share things on it they shouldn’t… Lesson to learn. In today’s world, keep your private life out of public view because there are always those who do not like you that will use that information to their benefit… Those who fired her should lose their jobs for being idiots!

  • Anthony Lewis

A job has no right to fire u or reprimand u for what is done on ur personal time period

  • Jill A. Gorze

The male coach must be winning football games while the female coach must be losing or the school doesn’t particuarly support girls’ sports. After all, a winning football team is sooooo much more important to a school than educating the children. Because that is why schools exisit. For boys to play a game and generate income!

  • Joni Pickering

Children under the age of 18 are NOT supposed to be on facebook… having said that WHAT grounds do they have for firing her. Especially since it was on her vacation and not school time.

  • MathGirlTM

Private life posted on a public forum (which is what Facebook is) is no longer private. However, unless there is a morality clause in the contracts, no firing should have taken place.

  • kyoung830

Actually, when you take a job that is in the public eye (teachers, police, politicians) you subsequently have no “privacy” per say. Yes, you do your best to keep your private life just that, but anything you post, like or say can be held against you because most people have nothing better to do than mess with other peoples lives. I do not agree that she lost her job and he didn’t. The standards should be the same, regardless of sex. I hope she is able to find justice in this ridiculous case.

  • Carolyn Buckner

well then she needs to return fire and sue for sexually harssment, i mean look at the pick clearly THEIR employee is gropping her after all.

  • Heathe’ Hipp Fosdick

Depends on how you look at things…first teachers should show some decorum in their job…it use to be that in the contracts there was a morality clause…basically…back in the day BOTH would have been terminated…this nation needs to realize that our action is what people judge us by…even in the work environment…

  • Sirrus Rider

Mr. Harrison should’ve shown Ms. Cook more respect by putting his hand elsewhere for the photo. His hand position indicates he thinks of her more as a sex object and possession. Furthermore Ms. Cook should’ve shown more respect for herself and moved his hand elsewhere like around to the small of her back.
In this context I can understand the School district. The picture shows without words some bad decision making on the woman’s part.

  • Proud American 88

I really thought that as a teacher, like a parent, you set a higher standard for you behavior. They both should lose their jobs as they have been a poor example of what these kids should be copying! What has happened to the standards, morals and values of America? No wonder these kids are wanderings aimlessly with no direction. Why are you all pushing SEX on these kids. Haven’t we seen that this isn’t good for them? Think about what you are doing TO the children and their future!

  • Pat Bailey

the school is insured by an insurance company for claims and accidents. This one is a big one BUT if there is no suggestive clause in her contract in or out of school concerning conduct and it is clearly defined she is screwed. Which is what it sounds like as she posted the picture and got terminated and he did not. Go ahead and argue with me if you want I have vast experience in school risk retention

  • Lonnie_Kushking

Why do men have nipples? Why can they show them in public, in commercials, and even prime time or kid shows if they are on the beach or at the pool. Sometimes they show kids under 18 with no shirts.

There was no “female nipples” exposed, no reproduction organs/sex organs shown….
How is this any ways a sexual photo?

Next, no mort two piece suits, and no more thong pics for the ladies.

I’m a guy, I think men in Speedos or hairy backs should be covered up.

  • DarthProphet

It’s the liberal bastion of Idaho would you expect anything less from a fascist mormon run town? Pocatello is the kind of town that gives Mormons a bad name.

  • Tom Buzzi

People need to stop taking offense from the stupidest things. It’s a harmless picture. that they fired her for this picture is BS!!. I saw this picture and did not see one thing wrong. This is So Stupid.

  • eatingdogfood

    We Have To Talk !!!

  • talltreetrader

I agree , some actions are private and # @ that is not your husband wish they were very st-ricked like 5o years ago now teachers are ( not all ) look at the new nasty nasty , you deserve to be fired for posting rude photo

  • jlenoreb

A little poor judgement on both their parts; however, the discrimination of firing her and only reprimanding him is pretty blatant!

  • Justme

Government knows best what you need and what you can have and can do. Just look at the recent election results across America and who won and what they represent. (sarcasm to the max)

  • Forest Johnson

Sounds like a civil right violation. Someone is using Church to influence state decisions!

  • Forest Johnson

I agree, but the sad thing, unless you literally lock down FB your info is pretty much Public Accessible Knowledge. I know many people that have two and will literally cut their heads out of a pic by erasing/pixilating and other techniques. Most all my pics have my Logo on, and a disclaimer stating they are private property etc… maybe we should all do that; can’t hurt, might help by making others take a second though about using it for evil..LOL

  • TheGardenMaster

Facebook is only public now if you set the perimeters for your page to be public. You can set it and use it as a private format. For those of you that are referencing a contract and morality. What exactly was immoral about this picture?

  • Taxpaying Unit

If it had been a girlfriend in the same pose, she’d be a hero up for promotion.

SUE the shit out of them, this crap is getting past out of hand, it is none of their business what you do in your personal time, where you go or what pics you take this is not Nazi Germany… or is it? beginning to wonder.

  • JimBob

SHE posted the picture. He did not. The point is HER poor judgement.

  • http://Askwhy.us/ M. Chris Ritchie

A ‘morality clause’ is another entity wanting to control what you do in your private life. Wrong and unconstitutional. You should not have to ‘prove’ that you are not doing anything wrong or immoral (that is between you and God at the end). It is like those about the NSA and spying (I have nothing to hide). That is not the point… The point is, they shouldn’t be looking anyways. YOU ALWAYS have something to hide that can be used against you weather you know it or not. Your privacy and that of others is protected and should not and can not be used against you. We have a right to privacy. All those who say (I have nothing to hide) would be singing a different tone if the government wanted to come search their house ever week to make sure they were ‘safe’ and not doing anything illegal. Same reason here…. I would never sign a morality clause or anything with it in there – BECAUSE IT IS NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS!

It seems the HNIC and I willing to bet he among the staff uses that one seems to have embolden the thuggish behavior of bureaucrats, to bully and beat down those that oppose them through the power of whatever bureaucratic function they have….. i have noticed other classes of people seemed to be more emboldened to do hate crimes to others.

  • Schmoemomma

Actually the age requirement for facebook is 13..

  • John Vermore

In general I agree with you. They, morality clauses, tend to get in the news when public faces of corporations do something in public that contradicts the image the corporation wants.

  • rocky

People need to be more careful with there actions. I’m glad she lost her job because what example is that to students. just making it ok and fun to get groped in public and be sluTty. women need to respect themselves do it in closed doors or keep picture to yourself. now a days there is no repercussion to ones actions. the guy however should had been fired as well.

  • Johnbraavo

It’s a mans world get used to it. :)

  • Jenn Washburn

Whats the school policy on teachers dating? and people need to live like they are always going to be on camera and judged because this is what the world has come to judgements dictate our lives. I agree about double standard each need the same treatment.. either a verbal warning on their conduct or terminate both for employee fraternization.

  • robertloggia16

Oh the humanity… People were clearly permanently injured by this behavior.

  • Scott Wilson

I wouldn’t want some chick who isn’t bright enough not to post a picture of a teacher groping her breast on Facebook teaching my children anything.

  • Michael Pesl

I was a teacher for 16 years and I fully understand the double standards school districts use to get rid or not hire teachers. In this case and others involving social media, schools and other employers should not have the right to scan or use social media of their employees at any time other than while actually working. To fire someone over a private moment is asinine. I hope she wins her suit against the school and send a message to schools don’t ‘own’ teachers time 24/7 just because they get paid a salary. Private time is private time. PERIOD. “Morality Clause” should not apply here because both are consenting legal age adults

  • http://www.facebook.com/justin.noe.75 Justin Noe

according to the school and students: she was winning games and the girls loved her for a coach! they also knew that she was dating the other coach. it wasn’t a secret to anyone. all the parents of the girls and some of the other parents stood up for the coach. this may be basically a Mormon town but don’t blame them for the coach that was fired. their girls are all on that team of sports. yes, he also is winning games. school board is the whole problem. cant be happy with having an excellent sports teams all around. gees!

  • Panther Smith

Don’t friend your company. Keep it private except to people who request you friend them. The school is wrong. This should be an easy win case. She should receive restitution in this case.

  • http://www.facebook.com/justin.noe.75 Justin Noe

What planet are you from?! pushing sex? kids go to movies an see worst. she has clothes on! little kids watch movies at home with their folks that isn’t rated for kindergarten. for heavens sake , get a life! you cant judge this woman on her vacation. it isn’t a secret that they are together! highschool kids are doing the same thing and they didn’t learn it from this coach.
Parents aren’t the problem Proud American 88 , it is people like you that fired her.

  • T Anne

Oh This is cute….the football coach still has his job, but she was fired…….how is that correct?

  • stu gotz

if she was a lesbian and took a picture with her “life partner” they wouldn’t dare fire her.

  • greywulf1064

Sounds like the work of some butthurt woman who doesn’t have a boyfriend to tweak her boobage

  • Bethany Gray Yarbrough

Wow! Go get them for this crap, Ms. Cook! School district should be walking with there heads up there a**es for this one. Public apology coming to this Coach…hopefully the judge that gets this case isn’t as ignorant as the school district.

  • http://www.caricatureartonline.com frank marshall davis

yeah sure, but is she still allowed free abortion rights and constitutional condoms, this hate crime would never happen to a transgender ‘s civil rights, dang woman hating birther teabuggers….

  • DUB

I hope she owns that school when she is done. she was on her own time. the school paid for nothing.Double standards make me sick. I used to live in Pocatello. I see it is the same old shit hole now that it was back then. if i was her I wouldn’t want my job back there because , as usual the school will retaliate and find another reason to fire her later be cause she made an example of them.

  • richard

Fire the school principal for being a sexist libtarded punk. Give Ms Cook her job back along with some extra cash for another vacation where she can show us her tits.

  • Sheila Stagner-Mace

I’m afraid that little disclaimer you post on your page doesn’t mean diddly squat, as you agree to the terms of use when you sign up for “Leftbook”. As a teacher, I’m sure she was careful which friends she allowed on her page….she probably had her profile set to “private” as well. Funny how the pic ended up in the hands of her boss…..I hope she sues for a large sum!

  • richard

If there is no suggestive clause she will win big

  • Baldo99

Scandal! We can’t have those Idaho kids (I grew up in Idaho 100 miles from Pocatello) thinking that their teachers and coaches are normal people who have normal emotions and normal sex lives! Teachers have to set a higher standard!

  • DaFool

Face Book pictures are public not private. She publicized her private life, and perhaps her students saw the pictures. . As far as the coach, he did not have any control over what she posted. Firing her was a bit too much.

  • Peter Kay

that such a playfully innocent photo…wtf are they thinking??

  • Leah Bittner

This is ridiculous. If they aren’t going to treat him the same way, then they shouldn’t do it to her. It is never appropriate for teachers to post such things to their very public pages (No matter what privacy settings they have) because they need to realize they are always held to a higher standard just because they are leaders. However, the double standard is the problem, here, not whether she should have posted it or not. The school system is in the wrong and it will have to answer for the double standard.

  • eper090643

Guess a few school board members are jealous they weren’t the ones with their hand on her breast.

  • Steven Bevier

The double standard in this situation is definitely wrong, she should have been reprimanded just like the male coach was. I do believe that she was in the wrong for posting (or allowing) this picture to be pictured even though it was on her private time.
The simple and plain truth is that sometimes the only decent role model a student has is their teacher or coach. Absentee or “too busy” parents, media darlings (Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears), or over hyped (they all are) sports stars are not good role models and therefore the last bastion for some students to have a chance is to look up to their teachers and coaches. I think teachers are underpaid and under-appreciated but they DO need to be held to a higher standard as they are such a huge part of a young persons learning process.
If this teacher sees a male student groping a female student how can she justify interfering when she herself allows it to be done to her? Telling a young person to “Do as I say, not as I do” is one of the quickest ways to lose all credibility with and respect of that student.
A reprimand and warning were in order (morality clause or not) but this definately did not warrant her being terminated.

  • C. Wyatt Hertz

Boyoboy, talk about a double standard, this one is egregious. Were I her, I’d sue the district IMMEDIATELY.

  • C. Wyatt Hertz

Now, what does an attractive woman, provocatively posed have to do with learning a foreign language?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=34201368 Jean Claude Van Kickinthenutss

What is immoral about grabbing someone’s breast with mutual consent?

  • Michelle Butrick

Funny how this photo gets a good teacher fired, but up here in Two Harbors MN we have a bus driver who verbally abuses her students and when the mother tries to get her reprimanded for her actions the mother is stonewalled by the district and the bus driver keeps her job without incident. their is both extremes of screwed up here in my opinion and I hope this teacher gets her job back and then some

  • John Vermore

A morality clause is a clause in a contract that allows termination for behavior that the corporation defines as reflecting badly on it. I personally doubt the teacher had one in her contract. If there was one, then it should apply equally to both people, not arbitrarily to one of them.

  • redneck

doesnt surprise me. find a new job

  • Owlisen

…and especially NOT when they are on their OWN vacation…
This is so wrong on so many levels!!!

  • Tony Reierson

If a teacher did that to a student the union would fight tooth and nail to keep the teacher, here is 2 ADULTS on vac. what has become of us?

  • Teresa Mosier

I’m sure she said “Honey will you grope my breast for this pic? Some men think its their right to do that.

  • Teresa Mosier

    Imagine….its the Male who’s doing the groping….

  • Teresa Mosier

Wait……he’s in the Pic also, regardless of who posted it! Does this shout Job and/or Gender Discrimination to anyone else?

  • Dave

Yes, but at the same time, once something is posted on Facebook it is no longer “private”. I know teachers who have been excused for pictures like this or a picture of them with a beer in a local news paper. I don’t agree with it, but people need to learn to be discerning as to what they post because some idiot out there might just be unable to get over themselves and make beef about it.

  • Teresa Mosier

And Discrimination…..they fired her….and not him. What message is the School Board sendingto anyone, including the kids he coaches?Gee, I would say its ok to grope your girlfriends breasts guys…..OMG

  • Dave

While this is ridiculous, the thing I constantly have to remind myself of is, “Facebook is not private”. Once you decide to post something on there it is no longer a private thought, attitude, or behavior. It becomes in part intellectual property of Facebook and will forever be in the public domain. This is why I laugh at celebs and politicians that try to delete idiotic tweets, it wont save the fact that it is now out there.
I feel for her, I think the situation sucks and should be dealt with. But it serves as a reminder, if you work with kids and teens it is better to use some discernment and appear to live above reproach. Be smart, don’t post stuff that might come back to bite you in the slightest way.

  • John Vermore

Could not agree more. Unfortunately, one possible “correction” would be for the school to fire both.

  • Richard Maloney

she blatently thrust her breast into this poor mans unsuspecting hand and with a grip of iron holding this poor fellow in torchurous embrace he was with out the strength or power to stop such blatently unwanted advances by this vixen….. i do hope he is in therapy now and able to function in society on day soon after such a tramatic event…..(and for those who dont understand sarcasm…. this is “SARCASM”)

  • Conrad Galindo

Lmao i worked at at a school where the p.e. coach cheated on his wife and eventually left her for his female co-worker p.e. coach ended up getting married. they had even been caught at school doing things and they didnt to a thing.

  • WildBill51

Schools think they own students 24/7. A student was suspended for playing with an Airsoft gun in his own yard.

  • Ross Hare

no….. the fascist system needs to be looked at more than we need to cower at its blatant violations of what should be every American’s right-life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness… dont tread on us for what are clearly not issues of crime or moral turpitude.

  • S. Hurst

WOW! She has grounds for a few severe counter charges against the district. Unless they fire the coach, which they can’t do now, because he’s already been reprimanned once for the issue. Their going to have to reinstate Ms. Cook, plus dole out some money for punitive damages. Go get them Ms. Cook!!!

  • Ross Hare

yep… no way our elections are open and honest and only a fool would accept as valid votes and polls that are clearly at complete odds with what everyone around them is saying… all the people say ” we want ice cream” but come election day lo and behold everyone voted for mud and caster oil? I don’t think so….

  • Ross Hare

yep by not firing him and firing her that couple is going to make some serious bank.. her lucky day in truth lol.. totally egregious and not a leg to stand on at all… the school board really stepped on its wanker on that one..

  • frustrated

Actually living in Pocatello myself and understanding the dynamics that make up this town, Yes, Yes they would fire her if she took a picture with her “life partner”. There is a lot people around here that think that homosexuality is a disease for some reason.

  • Dave

Yes, because it’s all the system’s fault. Look, I agree, they system is corrupt and needs to be overhauled, but this could have been completely avoided by not posting something like this picture on the internet. It is impossible to deny that she has some ownership in the problem, simply because it was her choice to post the picture. Do I agree with the outcome. No. But by god man, people need to pull their head out of the sand and stop giving people stupid reasons to chastise or lord over them.
People really should be aware that bosses and corporations look at people’s Facebook as almost another form of resume. Don’t want to have it bite you in the ass? Don’t post anything that someone might be able to use to do so. It’s pretty simple.

  • Frusturated

As far as news reports that are out on the matter locally, there is no morality clauses in the school contracts. I could see that there is a “morality clause” implied because of the culture around Pocatello. There are way to many incidents of someone getting offended because something goes against their religion. What most likely has happened (which I wouldn’t be surprised if this is what happened) is that someone found the picture on her Facebook Page, got offended because it goes against what they think is “right”, and brought it to the School District’s attention. At which time the School District fired her or face a pointless, invalid lawsuit from some crazy parent that’s so afraid that this is the “work of the devil”. In their heads, if they allow it to happen then their children will suddenly change and do something outrageous and start drinking, partying, and getting pregnant. This is all because of some teacher in her free time posted a personal photo of herself and her boyfriend enjoying their vacation time.

  • modvd

The double standard I have a problem with. The rest of it? No. If a private company were to exercise their right to terminate a person over something they didn’t like, nobody here would have a problem. A school district shouldn’t be any different.

  • Keith Houston

Yet, they will let Planned Parenthood people teach the students how to properly use a condom…

    So confused. Liberals are weird.

  • Bananarama Hamma

I was actually in the school’s favor because it’s long been a standard that activities outside work can be cause for dismissal at work, but if they’re gonna fire her, but not him, it’s just straight up being a sexist dbag

  • Pauline Benjes

Sadly this event is just another stepping stone to pave the way for Islam in America.

  • Jennifer Foster

That is just wrong. The man is clearly touching her and he only gets a reprimand and still allowed to teach? She gets fired even though she is not touching him in the same way he was touching her. Double standard. Goes to show, what you don’t want the world to see, keep it to yourself and off of facebook.

A “morality clause” is a legal term describing a clause that allows termination of a contract for actions that could be deemed embarrassing or damaging to the employer. The standard is implicitly arbitrary and does not necessarily involve immorality in the religious use of the term. Such clauses are known to be used in entertainment, sports and advertising. I do not believe they are common in education.

Once you put it on facebook, it’s no longer YOUR business.

  • Shawn

It shouldn’t matter if someone gets their panties in a wad over it. .. I’m sure someone finds it offensive you’re breathing. ..some people wake up with the sole intention of being offended at something. What the school board should of said. To the sad individual who brought this up was we’re sorry you have nothing better in life to do. … we’ll notify this teacher that something she did in her own time upsets you and she should probably remove you from any notification lists. .. in the mean time we have kids to teach so to put it as nicely as we can. ..fuckoff! And that should of been the end of it. Only in a non cradle to grave nannystate though of course. .. but what if.

  • Scott Ball

GEE. She was on her private time. It’s none of the school’s business. I hope she destroys them in court.

  • Dana DeWitt

Harmless photo..Two adults joking around and taking a picture, isn’t that the kind of thing you do on vacation? If she was singled out I think it is because someone is jealous. She is a pretty lady.

  • lmwelsh

Teachers pretty much know when they are hired that they are there as role models for our children and they know what is and isn’t appropriate. I am not a teacher and I would not have posted a picture like that even if it were my spouse grabbing my breast. As a society, we have lost all sense of morals and decency. This ” I don’t care attitude, I can do whatever I want attitude” seems to be great for people until they get in trouble for it. People really need to stop and think before they do things that could make a huge impact on their life.

  • Robert Grexer

Just because a picture, a post or what ever is “public” on Facebook, doesn’t mean that it should be used as grounds to fire someone. My political views, pictures and what ever else I or anyone else wants to put on Facebook should have NO bearing what so ever on whether or not I can perform the duties of my job.
If this was done during a school event, then that’s a different story, but it wasn’t. A picture on her page does not mean she’s incapable of coaching a Basketball team.

  • Kelly-Jeau Larson

The whole USA needs a REAL wake up call. I am not wise enough to know what would do the job. I first thought 911 would have been enough. But as we all know it has not been. From the little things, like this out dated attitude to fire one not the other (when neither should have had anything done to them). To the big issues like the US Government getting way out of hand with its laws and no sense of budget. I am tired of all this. Very.

  • Steve

Obvious double standard. They should both be punished or neither one. You have to be careful what you post on-line. It’s not private if you’re sharing it with the world. This picture is inappropriate to post. Especially if you work in a school. They should know better.

  • Carl Brown

unfortuntately it does not work that way I got into a political discussion with a student during the Christmas break. at the time I did not know this person was a student at my school .. I made the statement that her statement made her sound like an idiot and then went on to explain why they she threatened my job and was going to send her mommy and (step)daddy after (both of which also worked at the same school) needless to say I lost my job mostly because I beleive a good and responsible teacher will teach their student HOW to think and NOT WHAT to think.. unfortunately the liberal teachers union don’t see things that way.. and in the case of Ms Cook it was probably someone was jealous or made because she would not given them the time of day and go out with them.. this is what the world is coming to.. we have no rights anymore.. with that I say lock and load and get ready for either Civil War II or WW III

  • Robert Grexer

    Love this point of view,
    0-o Really?

  • Robert Grexer

oh stop. It was most likely done as a playful jest. Don’t read that much into it. THis ‘Political correct, stick up your ass’ attitiude in this country needs to go, NOW. Let people live their lives as they see fit. Find out who saw it and gave it to this Board. What was the ulterior motive here? Why is a parent of one of her students, or one of her students, looking at an adult’s facebook page? If you were actually friends with them, you’d probably realize it is a harmless picture.
I don’t know them or live remotely close to this town but i just can’t stand this world of nosy, assholes anymore

  • Andie

A persons choice of career is not who they are as a person, it is simply what they do to support their lifestyle. With that said I think my mother said it best. What goes on behind closed doors should stay behind closed doors and keep your business off the street. It’s a new world alright.

Are no private family albums available in which to stash these little gems?

  • Melissa A Vaughn

I could possibly understand what your saying if she was naked but there is nothing wrong this picture.

  • Kevin McCormick

if the kids are wandering aimlessly then its the parents fault we see you failed with your kids by your comments

  • David

Where do we draw the line? Do we need to be careful every time we are in public, for fear of being caught by someone’s camera doing something that some might consider immoral? Yes, I know she placed the photo on Facebook, herself, but I’ve seen scenes in prime time TV commercials that were a lot more risque.

  • Toni Sroka Dudlo

I personally don’t see anything wrong with the pic. And if people see something wrong with 2 people together, then they should keep their asses at home, as couples are together all the time. They were just sharing a pic of their vacation. People don’t go on vacations either, cause you’ll see all kinds of couples together, taking pics. What has this world come to. You all need to get a life, or move to another country that will keep you from seeing the real world.

  • stormal

We’re all now NSA fodder as well.

  • Melanie

It’s have GONE, NOT have went!!! Ugh!

  • Dave

You guys make me freaking laugh. I never said I thought anything was wrong with it. In fact I said I do not agree with the school’s choice, it sucks. But what I am saying is that someone somewhere may see something wrong with, she could have a conduct clause in her contract and to boob grab could be a breach of that, who knows. Either way, it’s a freaking silly thing to be fired over, but it could have been avoided by not posting such a thing.

People get offended, personally I could care freaking less, because no one is innocent in that. But it appears that people think I’m saying this picture is wrong and that the school was correct, which is not at all what I am saying. I am simply saying that there are two aspects here, one the school acting on its reasoning however foolish it may be, and two the choice to post a picture of her boyfriend grabbing her breast.

The whole thing is idiotic but sitting here screaming outrage over someone being reprimanded for her actions, which could have very well been against a conduct clause, but we don’t know this, when it could have been avoided all together by difference courses of actions of both parties.

  • Dave

Never said anything was wrong with the picture. I said it could have been avoided all together by not posting such a picture of a “boob-grab” and I also did say the school’s actions was ridiculous.

  • American Patriot

I think it should be illegal for companies or the government or anyone else to use posted social media against a person. The picture above there is nothing wrong with two consenting adult dating regardless if they work in the same work place—its not the business of the company or in this case the school system if these two people interact with each other. I think someone on the school system is just jealous they didnt get to feel up Ms. Jones. More and More I hear of people getting fired or repremanded from content put on social media and just because one or two people get their panties in a twist or disagree with the post the person posting the information is either fired or bullied or arrested for their freedom to express their personal feelings or expressions. Perhaps we should be getting more shit on the people cause the problems for others and having THEM FIRED, ARRESTED, or DISCRIMINATED, or BULLIED an see how they feel about it! SO many goodie–goodie–too shoes think they are so POWERFUL ahahaha I got you fired for posting on Facebook! KARMA IS A BITCH WITH A NASTY BITE MR. SCHOOL OFFICIAL!

  • Koliver

Don’t post pictures like that for pubic view while your working in the pubic eye !

  • John Baker

Dave you’re not getting it. If we are forced to not be able to put up any picture of this kind we are letting the nanny state win. Why are we forced to put up with people that have a bug up their ass? Letting the minority of people who are offended at nothing rule our lives is so wrong. Turn the channel, read a book, or take a chill pill but stay the hell out of my life. If I wanted to post a picture of this type that’s my business. If your offended then unfriend me but don’t wreck my life over it. Just saying it all could have been avoided by not posting it is the wimpy way out. Grow a spine if you agree it was not a bad picture then be against the asshat that complained and don’t be the asshat that takes their side.

  • jeffb

Is that her grandfather or her boyfriend? or both? Ha ha ha!!!

  • David J Winters

If you post it on a social website , it’s not private any longer.

  • Sickofdouchebags

People really need to learn how to use Facebook privacy settings. On
another note, maybe if this neanderthal boyfriend of hers would show
some common decency the picture of him douching it up would have never
    existed in the first place.

  • Gary

Whatever happened to adult responsibility and modesty. I’m not a prude and I don’t believe she should lose her job but both of them are employees of the school and should set some sort of adult example. This flies in the face of setting a moral example for the children they come in contact with each day.

  • Dana DeWitt

Harass is one word not two

  • crazyllama

Actually the total opposite. Her girls team was winning and the girls loved her. His football team had a 2-7 record this season.

  • farmgirl63

Your adjectives point to the crux of the dilemma-silly. School districts, employers in general have no business on my internet page period. And what I do on my time is my business. Unless I am “on the clock” I am not under their policies. I have been a teacher, and choose not to subject my self to their prejudices and double standards.

  • Susan

But she posted it! I think that’s the point. Not that it happened but that she posted it where her students could see it!

  • SKS74

Perfect! Yes, yes! I’m a teacher and a single woman, and I live a pretty “tame” life (55-60 hrs a wk does leave much time for crazy), but occasionally I like to let loose and enjoy the perks of being an adult. I’m a terrific teacher and have given the last 12 yrs of my life to serving my students as best as I can. However, I refuse to allow being a teacher make me live in fear and walk on the eggshells of everyone’s sensiblities day-in and day-out… And I guess someday it may cost me my job, but so be it. I can’t a puppet or a robot and still be a good teacher.

  • theundeadtalkinghead

are you fucking kidding me? this couple is doing nothing illegal on their own time. her employer doesnt matter who it is has no right whatsoever to say shit……end of story. where do people like her employer get off passing judgment on her? depriving her of her livelihood and for what? not living up to some unrealistic expectation of how much fun a hot school teacher is allowed to have on vacation? i hope she gets smart fires the lawyer buys 5 gallons of diesel and a road flare and burns some chickenshit motherfuckers down.

  • SadToCallThisHome

I am from pocatello and it is a very uptight community. If you do not believe as the majority does you are an outsider. This picture was only posted on Cooks page for 1 day and then she removed it a while ago probably because she her self realized it wasn’t the best picture to post. All of a sudden the picture resurfaced probably by someone who has a problem with Cook.

I think people are looking in to the fact that she was fired and Harrison was not way too much! She is the one who posted the picture which is why she is the one who was fired. Harrison was reprimanded. Don’t get me wrong I don’t agree with the school boards decision!

  • pacificman

Might as well cover head to toe then. Follow Sharia Law cause anything else might be used against you! Your kind of thinking is exactly what empowers these tyrants.

  • SKS74

I agree – except for the part where you fault/admonish her for posting/sharing. There is no reason that she should have to keep her personal life hidden. To say ‘keep your private life out of public view’ encroaches on her rights. Just b/c people will try to abuse their power like this does not mean that we should acquiesce to their unwarranted scrutiny and live in fear. I refuse to do so.

  • SKS74

    Thank you! Yes!!

  • SKS74

Perhaps, but the school wouldn’t risk the ACLU coming to their defense and bringing it to national headlines. Gay rights are a very popular cause to champion these days and the ire of the parents notwithstanding, the school would not risk the backlash.

  • SKS74

    100% agree!!

  • SKS74

    Now that’s some bullsh*t, too!

  • SKS74

Actually, they are quite common… or something similar – I have taught public school for 12 years and my contract has always had a “moral turpitude” clause. Personally, I think it is totally BS, but I want to teach, so I sign it. However, “morality” is rather subjective and I’d like to know what business a PUBLIC school has demanding morality from its teachers – legality, yes, but morality is about personal values and belief systems. I’m pretty sure I can’t stand up in front of my class and tell the kids that sex before marriage, or homosexuality, or being pregnant out of wedlock is immoral, or that if their parents drink or smoke they are a terrible example… I would get fired in a heartbeat. That would be imposing my values and beliefs on them and that is not allowed. Smells too much like promoting a religion in a public school. But apparently, the school system gets to force its values on me and decide if I am moral or not. How is this OK??? Aren’t these the same people who are so adamant about ‘separation of church and state’?? You can’t have it both ways. – And this is coming from a professing Christian who would love to see more faith influence in schools, but I realize that there are boundaries. Too bad the government only sees those boundaries when they want to!

  • SKS74

The point is that we should not have to keep our personal life hidden. It’s not
like there is anything illegal or indecent (as assessed by any sane person)

member, a student, and his/her parent happened to be floating by in a boat on
the river and witnessed this in real life? Maybe even snapped a picture of
their own… Is the teacher to blame then too? Do you think the school board
would pursue punitive action in that case? Is this act itself censure worthy?

No – YOU are the PARENT. I am the teacher. These are NOT the same. Do I get to spank your child if I think they deserve it? Do I get to tell your daughter that she cannot go to the movies or the mall with a boy? Do I get to tell your child what music they can listen to? What church to attend? Do I get to tell your child that the reason that they should abstain from sex until marriage is because God created it to be a wonderful thing only shared between one man and one woman in the bonds of marriage and that since God created us and sex, He knows the way for us to best experience it? NO, I do not… because it is a PUBLIC school! You should not expect me to be a moral example for your child if I cannot also tell them WHY. – Teaching your children morals is YOUR job. How dare you shirk that responsiblity and pawn it off on teachers. If you think that seeing a picture like this is going to unravel the moral fiber you have instilled in your child, well, then you must not have much faith in your ability as a parent and are acknowledging that you’ve done a piss-poor job of training your kid in the way he should go.

The point is that we teachers should not have to keep our personal life hidden. It’s not like there is anything illegal or indecent (as assessed by any sane person) happening in that photo. – This woman has as much right as anyone else to post this picture. If people think this

Just the way the social media sites have it set up. How do you think Twitchy and sites like that get your tweets? Twitter sells it to them. There are a few sites that track facebook like that too. It is in he agreement of terms of use, that they can do whatecer they want. Oh well. Nothing is private.

I used to work for the Pocatello School District. Hell, I went to from 1st all the way up to 12th grade here. It wasn’t so bad. Used to be good in fact. However, in my opinion, it felt like it changed when Mary Vagner was appointed Superintendent. She is a bitch. And honestly, thats putting it lightly. She doesn’t understand how to run an effective district. She cuts funding from the wrong programs, she makes too much money for the job she is failing to do, she simply runs the district to essentially keep her ridiculous paycheck, and has zero-tolerance for others opinions. It’s her way, or the highway. That’s not how it should be. School board was selected by her so she wouldn’t have any opposition. It was wrong of Lorraine Cook to be fired. Students rallied for her, and so did parents. In this upcoming legal struggle with the district, I hope she wins without a doubt. I trust that she will succeed.

  • Jon

Dave I agree with you. I think that the system is fundamentally flawed and that there is an obvious issue here with the double standard however, I also think that she should be more discerning in this day and age. Obviously there is concern over what the public has access to and to say that they have no business looking at the page of a teacher is fucking stupid. If she had bee blowing 10 guys and smoking crack you would want to know that so don’t everyone jump on the bandwagon and act all holy. This woman should not be posting shit she doesn’t want seen. How bad is the picture? That is called subjective information people and like I said, if she was at a swingers party or smoking crack you would want to know. The school board has a right to help protect our children so grow the fuck up. Should she be fired? No, I don’t think so and I don’t think the photo is bad but that isn’t the issue here the issue is the double standard not the intrusion of privacy.

  • Susan Chasecousineau

Did anyone notice that it wasn t her hand that was doing anything wrong? You see chances are it s a male run school board and they gave each other a high 5 over what the man did. Therefore, in public they tell him not to do it. But when the camera is off they told him good job. Again he is probably paid a higher salary (males usually are) and he keeps his job she loses hers. It s normal the best way to keep someone down ( women) is to control them and this is just a blatant example of discrimination.

  • Michele Cox Sanchez

    sex discrimination that’s for sure.

  • Joni Pickering

yup. my mistake. I guess I believe it should be 18. The content on facebook is def. not suited for someone younger.

it’s not “your Private life” when you post it on the internet for everyone to see….yes seems harmless too me and you , but if someone might get their panties in a wad about it is it worth it?? when in doubt KEEP IT PRIVATE!

  • BlackBettysBlog

    How is that sex discrimination?

  • http://Askwhy.us/ M. Chris Ritchie

I agree with you… Someone should have the right to ‘flaunt’ regardless of how unclassy or agreeable their private life. I have friends who are swingers who flaunt it (when there are no children around). What I meant by that, is that in today’s world where everyone follows what you are doing and scrutinizes it for their own selfish uses, it is best to keep it private (since our privacy is disappearing every day). You need to safe guard it as best you can.

  • John Vermore

I appreciate the information, I was not aware they were common in education.

  • John Vermore

I agree with the call for discretion. Facebook is in essence a public blog. Employers and others are known to look at it. Discretion is called for.

  • Sarah

What you do on your time is your business, and what you post is yours, if all of your privacy locks are in place. The sad fact of the matter is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, even Pinterest and other social media sites are too accessible and like it or not- employers are able to see content. Regardless of your judgement of the photos you post, it is the perception it gives off. Many issues have risen from not the owner of the page posting- but friends posting to their walls which has caused issues. I don’t think anyone here is justifying that employers, school districts, friends or family for that matter should be able to judge a person by their facebook page…but the reality is they do. Better to be proactive and protect yourself.

  • Tabetha Begley

Rip this school board a new one ms cook. Your private life is exactly that. Yes I know once you put it on Facebook…. You wasn’t on there time so the can’t do that!! If that is the case the maybe they should it that to the presidents too. Because they are out doing the some thing!!! I hope you beat them. We will be praying for you!!

  • Mindie C

The other kicker to this story is that a copy of the photo was delivered to the school district after she had removed from facebook. Coach Cook is an amazing lady and it’s dumb founding that our school district chooses to focus on this rather than on the real issues in our schools. Just because someone has a personal vendetta against her and is trying to ruin her career, they shouldn’t succeeded and the school district should be ashamed of helping them.

  • Mindie C

Dave, the school district didn’t see the photo on facebook. It was posted to facebook for about 24 hours before she removed it. However, someone delivered a copy of the photo to the district office last month. The it all started to roll from there.

  • JoeDrager

I find the photo offensive; because it’s not me holding the breast.

  • Tom Bass

Read the article before you comment. The man worked at the same school district, the same school and still has his job. How is that not discrimination?

  • arTaylor

It would be one thing if it was a picture of her doing drugs or drinking excessively because those things impair your ability to work, or even if there was a little more going on in the grope department, but it’s obviously just joking around (if the girl making faces behind them is any indication). I agree with some other posters in that it’s either blatant discrimination or someone with a vendetta.

  • BlackBettysBlog

I didn’t comment, Tom. I asked a question. That’s what the little curly thing at the end means. Anyway. what I read is that something happened to a woman that didn’t happen to a man. There might be a discrimination claim in there, but not necessarily ***because*** (now pay attention here) you don’t have any facts about the case except those that the blogger wants you to have. (Thought exercise: If the guy had gotten fired but not the gal, would the blogger have picked it up? Would you and Michele be shouting, discrimination?)

Well, I teach in suburban GA, so I guess I’m not sure if they are common nationwide. – Incidentally, I’ve seen it enforced in ridiculous ways. For example, a great new teacher (newly married, new father) at my middle school also coached for the high school. A kid mouthed off to him on the highschool practice field, cussing him out. He yelled at the kid to put him in his place, parroting back the same curse words – “Oh, really?! Well, how about you ‘#%@*…..’ ” or something like that… A parent overheard it, didn’t like it, – bam! – guy loses his job! So, so stupid. – And the ed system loses another passionate teacher who had planned to spend their (not-so-lucrative) career serving kids… Stupid.
(Btw, for any of the hater-trolls out there who notice that I’m posting this midday – I am off work on a personal day today, so relax.)

The questions should be what were these people doing touching each other sexually in a public place. Sorry folks but that is exhibitionism and does show how little character either teacher has. They are school teachers and made that choice. They are teaching children and need to set an example. What I don’t understand is why they were not arrested for indecent activities. It looks like a recreation area where children will be present or at least other people.
There is nothing more disgusting than adults having sex in front of others. Yes they are in the act of foreplay for sex since he is not an infant and not needing nourishment.
Both teachers need to find a different job, they are obviously unable to be good role models since they can’t seem to respect anyone around them and keep their sexual foreplay in private.
It was not the picture but the fact they have no ability to act like adults and they want to teach children. What are they teaching their charges that inappropriate behavior is fine as long as you can bully others into accepting the show.

The moral of all this is a teacher should be a role model for the kids, this isn’t a good example. Although this isn’t what a good role model would post on fb so that all the kids can see it but she shouldn’t have lost her job for it. They should have warned her, and had the photo removed or the kids from her school be removed from her profile. Believe it or not the kids in school most often have their teachers as friends, the ones they like atleast. She’s beautiful so I’m sure she has some on her fb, but as for her boyfriend….he is different. So be it guys are different than women, just like the fact that a girl can’t go walking around town with her shirt off, or that guys can’t go wearing a bikini bottom on everywhere. Bad example but you get the picture, now see if she had her hand down his pants then it would’ve been the same punishment for him or if he had his hand down hers. A boob is a boob it was her decision to let him grab it therefore it’s her mistake.

The question you asked is answered by the facts presented in the article and substantiated by comments that reflect first hand knowledge of the incident. The facts appear to be:
    1. She made the mistake of posting the picture on Facebook and immediately took it down once she realized the mistake.
    2. She was fired from her job.
    3. The man in the picture was working at the same school and was not fired from his job.
Now given these presented facts are true it is difficult to see how someone could ask how is this discrimination. If you have a problem with the veracity of the information presented that should have been your question. The question you elected to ask made your reading comprehension skills appear to be lacking.

i dont know what the school boards policies are and what the teachers agreed to when they got hired. there are alot of grey areas but what concerns me is the fact they are treating him different than her. if the policies were violated then it was violated by both of them so they should recieve the same punishment.

  • Pj Neeley

I think the double standard is more the issue. She is fired for having her boob grabbed by her husband. Her husband, who works at the same school, is not fired. So, what is the message? If you have boobs, don’t let your husband grab them? I mean…people seem to missing the more glaring issue on this one.

  • laura koning

wow I mean I knew privacy was dead but this is absurd! She did nothing wrong and this school board should be ashamed of themselves, I guess jealousy got the best of these morons,Hope you win that law suit because their actions clearly indicate double standards. The saddest part the kids are the ones being punished by having a good teacher ripped away because of bullshit.

  • Ms. K

Yes, that is exactly what happened. I am a teacher in this district, and I know Ms. Cook. The whole thing is just a mess.

  • Ms. K

Here’s a little more perspective on this area of southeast Idaho. Get a map, look at Pocatello, then look to the first major city to the south. The culture here is different than most of the rest of the U.S., and those of us who are not part of this “Culture” deal with this sort of thing every day.

  • nimh

Maybe you didn’t realize, but you can set your Facebook posts to be seen by your friends only; and in this case, the teacher wasn’t fired because the photo was publicly available and the school just came across it. As another commenter here explained, “the photo .. was posted to facebook for about 24 hours before she removed it. However, someone delivered a copy of the photo to the district office last month. The it all started to roll from there.” So no, it’s not about her posting stuff “for everyone to see”, and posting something to Facebook does not have to involve.posting stuff “for everyone to see”.

  • jen

Isn’t the double standard here eyeopening? If she was gay or a minority this would have turned out differently!

  • BlackBettysBlog

thank you for making my point.

First, though, why, as you charge, was it a mistake for the woman to put the photo online? I didn’t see that in the blog post.

Anyway, you extracted three facts from the post (including the mysterious “mistake” qualification). Are you sure there aren’t others that the blogger chose not to share or was unaware of? She clearly has chosen sides here. I”m not challenging the truth (veracity; big word, fella) of the statements, but only wondering if there is more to the story than the blogger is letting on.

To the larger question: Is this a case of sex discrimination? Discrimination is something that happens **because** of the individual’s sex, not just that the something happened to an individual who is female and did not happen to an individual who is male. Do you see the distinction?

Now, what fact among the three you cited cause you to think that it happened to the woman *because* she is a woman, not just that she a woman and something happened to her that did not happen to the man?

  • BlackBettysBlog

I must have missed the part where Christians cut off people’s heads for refusing to submit or mutilate little girls to enforce morality laws. In any case, if you haven’t met too many Christians, why do you hate them all?

  • Rusty Jewell

I think too many people are focused on the picture itself and not of Ms. Cook’s job. She’s the girls basketball coach. The teachers’ union expects that position to be filled with a lesbian to teach the kids acceptance and tolerance if not to guide them properly down the road the unions want. clearly she is portraying herself as a heterosexual which cannot be accepted from the girls basketball coach.

  • Manuel Falcon

I’ve always wondered if an employer came across a picture of me hitting a bong which I do have, would they fire me for that. Even though I’m a great employee, hard working, nice, clean cut, loyal unless they disrespect me than I’ll tell them to take this job a shove it. It’s like a guest complaining, “one of your employees smokes marijuana on his off time I don’t want to stay at your hotel”. What exactly would what I do on my on time have to do with my work ethics.

  • Tired of Crap

I have to say I’m happy that you are no longer teaching because you can’t even write a correct paragraph. Using the computer is no excuse. Spelling and grammar are still important, maybe more than ever.

  • Anonymous

They have the rest of the teachers in the district too scared to say a word. I can’t say who I am, nor can I say who is quoted below, wouldn’t want more people getting fired…

“And now the district is trying to get her teaching certificate revoked! She would never be able to teach in Idaho. Either’s there’s something we don’t know, or they’re trying to scare the bejesus out of us all by making her an example, or this is personal. I can see why they would disapprove of her posting it. That was stupid but apparently she took it right down within 24 hours. And trust me, worse things have occurred at this district. But now I’m afraid to even say anything about this on Facebook. If they were trying to intimidate, it’s working.”

  • SKS74

“Morality” is rather subjective and I’d like to know what business a PUBLIC school patrons have demanding morality from its teachers – legality, yes, but morality is about
personal values and belief systems. I’m pretty sure I can’t stand up in front
of my class and tell the kids that sex before marriage, or homosexuality, or
being pregnant out of wedlock is immoral, or that if their parents drink or
smoke they are a terrible example… I would get fired in a heartbeat. That
would be imposing my values and beliefs on them and that is not allowed. Smells
too much like promoting a religion in a public school. But apparently, the
school system gets to force its values on me and decide if I am moral or not.
How is this OK??? Aren’t these the same people who are so adamant about
‘separation of church and state’?? You can’t have it both ways. –

Do I get to spank your child if I think they deserve it? Do
I get to tell your daughter that she cannot go to the movies or the mall with a
boy? Do I get to tell your child that the reason that they should abstain
from sex until marriage is because God created it to be a wonderful thing only
shared between one man and one woman in the bonds of marriage and that since
God created us and sex, He knows the way for us to best experience it? NO, I do
not… because it is a PUBLIC school! You should not expect me to be a moral
example for your child if I cannot also tell them WHY. – Teaching your children
morals is YOUR job. If you think that seeing a picture like this is going to
unravel the moral fiber you have instilled in your child, well, then you must
not have much faith in your ability as a parent to train your kid in the way he
    should go.

The point is that we should not have to keep our personal
life hidden. It’s not like there is anything illegal or indecent (as assessed
by any sane person) happening in that photo. What if instead of seeing this
picture, a school board member, a student, and his/her parent happened to be
floating by in a boat on the river and witnessed this in real life? Maybe even
snapped a picture of their own… Is the teacher to blame then too? Do you
think the school board would pursue punitive action in that case? Is this act
itself censure worthy? If your mail carrier did the same thing, she they be

If people think this anything even slightly resembling the “moral
turpitude” that all school teachers must eschew, they must be living in
some kind of delusional Amish country bubble, or under Shiryah law or
something. To say ‘keep your private life out of public view’ encroaches on her
rights. Just b/c people will try to abuse their power like this does not mean
that we should acquiesce to their unwarranted scrutiny and live in fear.

  • SKS74

“Morality” is rather subjective and I’d like to
know what business a PUBLIC school has demanding morality from its teachers -
legality, yes, but morality is about personal values and belief systems. I’m
pretty sure I can’t stand up in front of my class and tell the kids that sex
before marriage, or homosexuality, or being pregnant out of wedlock is immoral,
or that if their parents drink or smoke they are a terrible example… I would
get fired in a heartbeat. That would be imposing my values and beliefs on them
and that is not allowed. Smells too much like promoting a religion in a public
school. But apparently, the school system gets to force its values on me and
decide if I am moral or not. How is this OK??? Aren’t these the same people who
are so adamant about ‘separation of church and state’?? You can’t have it both
ways. – Do I get to spank your child if I think they deserve it? Do I get to tell your daughter that she cannot go to the movies or the mall with a boy? Do I get to tell your child what music they
can listen to? What church to attend? Do I get to tell your child that the
reason that they should abstain from sex until marriage is because God created
it to be a wonderful thing only shared between one man and one woman in the
bonds of marriage and that since God created us and sex, He knows the way for
us to best experience it? NO, I do not… because it is a PUBLIC school! You
should not expect me to be a moral example for your child if I cannot also tell
them WHY. – Teaching your children morals is YOUR job. If you think that seeing
a picture like this is going to unravel the moral fiber you have instilled in
your child, well, then you must not have much faith in your ability as a parent
to train your kid in the way he should go.

This woman has as much right as anyone else to post this
picture.

    Seriously!

  • pissedoffnewyorker

that’s why you become friends with the bosses, you get dirt on them and you have proof of the dirt they want to hide and when shit goes wrong, you remind them that if you go down, they go down with you. That’s what I do all the time

  • pissedoffnewyorker

if you read facebook and all social networks, once you upload a photo, you have no rights. they can use it, sell it, promote it and do whatever the hell they please with the photos. So if the networks feel that way, imagine some ahole in an office looking for an axe to grind.

  • chad

Maybe it was the photo bomber that felt left out. Nobody has even mentioned her yet, so I’ll point it out lol.

  • Fawn

One more example of why public schools are a bad idea.

  • Jessica Knorr

Best thing I can come up with in regards to this is everyone in agreement go listen to the song Harper Valley PTA

Everyone has something in their life that someone would find offensive. People need to realize you should not have to explain legal behavior when you are not at work.

  • Jessica Knorr

Because when you were making those children you somehow made your wife pregnant without any sexual contact? LMAO

  • Concerned One

You’re right they should have both been fired. Can’t have a double standard and you would think a teacher would behave better than that. Private moments are private moments, that means that they can’t ever end up anywhere since they are private. Since she posted them on her Facebook page that obviously means they weren’t private since people don’t usually sign up to Facebook and have nobody but a spouse on their friends list, so anything she shared would have been among friends.

Odd how many teachers forget that they are supposed to demonstrate good morals and decency at all time. Being allowed to be around people’s children and being put in a position where people are entrusting their childs education to you means you have to display the utmost highest standards.

  • Big Dog9MM

It is none of the school’s business…but I figure we are not getting the whole picture here. Does the school have a policy about posting on facebook? She posted and the other coach didn’t? Is that their point? She posted, he didn’t? We have a policy that you do not friend kids on your facebook page…if you need access to kids on facebook do it through the district facebook pge and in the open. The picture is in poor taste…but hardly gounds for firing. But it is not open and shut that she will win this case.

  • Teacher

Facebook makes your private life public. Anyone who doesn’t know that doesn’t know what “social media” is. Don’t post anything on Facebook that you wouldn’t want on the front page of your local newspaper. That said, firing her is an over-reaction. The photo is sexually suggestive (come on – copping a feel???). They should have both been reprimanded, required to remove the post, and then go on. Firing one of them looks like discrimination to me.

  • Big Dog9MM

Does anyone know the school district’s policy under which she was fired?

  • debbuch

…if following that logic, in the case of a “boob-grab” the “grabber” should be punished more severely than the “grabee”…It is a clear case of double standard…and that makes it legally indefensible for the district. They have proved themselves discriminatory in the application of workplace discipline. (PJ Neely, just a point of info…it is a boyfriend, not husband…)

  • Laurie Wolford

She lost it but he didn’t? Isn’t that his hand on her breast? What a bunch of B.S.! I can see some things done on personal time counting against you (alcoholism, drug use, etc), but a harmless picture taken of two consenting adults who are also in a relationship, think someone had a hard on for her before this. That’s what it looks like to me.

  • One Planet, Let’s Share

In no way, just because it is public, should it matter. If they know you probably drink and coddle with the opposite sex in your free time, why do they have to go seek it out, make a big ridiculous immature deal about it. If they don’t have students on their FB, which would be wise, it SHOULD not matter especially if it isn’t set to “public”. The taboos in this country are ridiculous, and the fact that people are going belly up as cowards saying that anybodys’ legitimate and legal activities are their bosses concern. If the system wasn’t so damn stuck up in the first place, filled a with a bunch of hypocritical nancy pants asshats, trying to regulate peoples time, lives and hobbies so much the world would be a 500X better place. I’m just glad I’ve distinguished that I’ll either never work for someone who gives a fuck that I smoke weed, and drink and cuss and act like an idiot because it makes me life fucking sweet as hell. I may have wasted my time getting a degree just to figure out I wasn’t going to change myself to work for some dickwad that has his underwear too tight, and hasn’t delatched from his mommy’s tits.

  • One Planet, Let’s Share

The point is that there is NO reason to be reprimanded for these actions. NONE. He was like gently placing his hand there he wasn’t even really grabbing it. Humanity needs to GROW UP.

  • One Planet, Let’s Share

Which brings us back to the immature people making a big deal about it, creating ridiculous taboos, and making people lives ever increasingly less fun to live. If it was something raunchy like the blow jobs and crack comment above I’d say, O.K. well.. you’d probably notice something was up before you’d find something on FB anyway… but by all means let’s keep making a big deal over the little things in life. I hope she gets this all squared away. Poor gal.

  • Lyn Gray

Common sense obviously eluded this school board. One can only hope they don’t pass their stupidity on to the students. I hope she sues the bum off the lot of them

  • valhallavoice

school board members, in my experience, are not the brightest bulbs in the box. They will lose and cost the taxpayers plenty.

  • tracy

That really isn’t surprising, there has always been a double standard for women.I hope she takes it to court. It is HIS hand that is on her breast. Her hands are NOT anywhere questionable, and really what is the big deal anyway?

  • Teach

@ce3ce7ff1a2b2b5ae1fce6cea7a23eb8:disqus When you chose the teaching profession you have a fiduciary responsibility to your students and community if not a personal responsibility. I am thinking with your stated attitude you should check into another profession. I am sure there is a ethics clause in your contract.

  • tracy

Your absolutely right. Why people publish their life on Facebook for the world to know is beyond me.Seems to me if you are going to publish your life on line, you are going to take some hits.

  • Seadog

Maybe you don’t realize Nimh…if you put it on the internet you can hang “privacy” out to dry…pure and simple…you want your photo’s private???put em in an album on YOUR book shelf!

  • Dave

Which is exactly the point I made. Once it hit’s the public domain of the internet it is no longer private.

It’s truly unfortunate. I think the school acted ridiculously, but there is a lesson to learn here. Sadly, it’s at the expense of a woman who really didn’t think anything of it.

  • Dave

Oh no I’m getting it. Twenty years ago this wouldn’t have mattered, but in the day of social media everything is going absolutely insane when it comes to privacy vs “nanny state”.

I haven’t taken either side. I see two sides to the story, so let’s not be all hasty and bring in liberal arguing tactics of calling people names.

Personally, I think the picture is tacky, period. Professionally, legally, matter at hand, I couldn’t give a care in the world if she posts it, despite my personal feelings. But someone obviously found it to be a big deal, which is unfortunate but could have been avoided.

As for people with a “bug up their ass” I tend to agree. People need to get the hell over themselves, period. You’ll get offended, I’ll get offended, You will offend someone, and I will offend someone. People need to learn to just suck it up and get over it.

Now since the picture was later showed around, it could have created enough buzz among idiots that the school really had no other means of quieting the idiocy of people who would find this offensive. Unfortunately there is a lot more to this event than I am sure this article details.

  • Dave

^ This I agree with completely. The sad matter of fact is that the school acted idiotically. Should have either canned the two of them for the same reasons, or at the most given them a warning. Period.

  • Dave

Or just live above reproach and let the bosses burn themselves to the ground. lol

  • Dave

Friends can show friends who can save pictures or whatever. Once something hits the digital domain it is no longer private.

Case in point. Twitter, look at the idiots that get in trouble for posting idiotic things on there then delete it. But before they can delete it half a million people have seen it, retweeted it, copied it, sent it to Twitchy, bla bla bla. The only way to keep something private is to keep it analog or better in your head, and that is the sad truth of it.

  • tweak222

So you basically called someone you didn’t know (which happened to be a student at your school) an idiot. Regardless of whether or not you were referring to her statement, the disrespectful manner in which you addressed her statement is a personally insulting remark. That’s the kind of respect with which you intended to teach your students how to debate topics? Also, the fact that it makes a difference how respectful you are in an argument is based on whether or not it is a student at your school is representative of the same double standard by which the teacher in this article was fired and it brings into question the standards of morality you may have potentially passed on to your students. While your intentions may have been in the right spot, there is never an appropriate time to resort to childish behavior in debate.

You are right though, a good and responsible teacher will teach their student HOW to think and not WHAT to think, but also how to be respectful of others’ ideas and opinions especially in regard to debate. Let us not forget that the sorry nature of our nation is rooted in a blatant disrespect for the lower echelons of our social classes and it is to that realization which the masses are beginning to wake up.

  • dave green

So, why was she fired over something the man did. Putting his hand on her boob I thought would be considered as sexual assault. (sarcasm). Other than that, I would trade places with him, but my wife would get upset.

  • Pet Peeve

I believe the phrase is: “I couldn’t care less”, not “I could care less”. Just a pet peeve of mine.

  • CarolFromPocatelloID

No one is getting the real reason for why this teacher was fired! She HAD other issues happen during her term as a teacher!!! You can only get so many reprimands before being FIRED!!

  • Cory

What a crock! WOW! This is the best of your problems? #lame

  • bwaybaby

while I believe that if you are a teacher, you should not post all of your personal photos on public pages, the double standard of the man touching her breast keeping his job is insane.

  • Heathe’ Hipp Fosdick

Yes it is the Parent’s responsibility, but TEACHERS work for the tax payers, who are also the parents…they are to be ROLE MODELS for children too…this means ALL TEACHERS…both should have received the same disciplinary action, and like it or not…it is also a part of your job to teach social interaction and how to behave…and that means incorporating morals and displaying proper behavior at times. Now should she have been fired…no…but she should have not displayed a picture of her boyfriend grabbing her breast in public…now that is unacceptable for anyone! Now…I was a teacher and loved it…and I hate to inform you of this…if you don’t want to be a role model to the kids, well…

  • Owlisen

Yeah sure… but they didnt do anything wrong in the first place.
They were on their holiday… what you do on your holiday should be your business… not your employers…

  • Dave

    Bingo!

  • Oscar Klipp Sr.

Your a idiot and if your more worried about some typos then the content of the story you should just keep your trap shut. You don’t even have the testicular fortitude to use you real name or pic. It’s easy to spout off at the mouth when you hide who you are. Grow a back bone !!!

  • prospecttorjon

So Dave your saying that someone who post a picture like this should see it as corrupting and not post it. Humm, now I would see this as not nearly as bad as the stuff Planed Parenthood comes into our schools and spoon feeds to our children. You know that safe sex stuff, abortions are great and normal, video’s on the art of being involved in swinging etc.. But I agree the system needs to be changed but in no way do I see fault with this picture or posting it.

  • papabear101

Ms, Cook was rehired as a sub teacher but I don’t know if she has been hired back as a coach.

  • John Roswell

i agree with you Shawn ..however some pic a not meant to be posted this one is completely innocent i see nothing wrong with this she is covered there is no nudity in this pic nothing for anyone to say omg over other then her stunning beauty.

  • Whiteboy

I think grammar nazis should have their head chopped off so we can shit down their throats.

  • Dennis Horg

Grammar is not important that for people who think there smart when there not. lol. Maybe some are smart. But it’s more important to speak you mind.I want to hear what people say even if the have bad grammar. I’m not dumb i’ll understand you with bad grammar and bad spelling.

  • Loosgravel

Disgusting! The same upstanding protectors of virtue and chastity in the educational profession are busy providing contraceptives, teaching elementary school students about the gay life and supporting lessons on how to masterbate. They belong in the same basket with other little fachists like those at Mozilla. Get us rid of these control freaks!

  • James Brown

Can you run that past me in English next time ?

  • TheLight

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that maybe they couldn’t fire the male teacher because he had tenure? You’re all rushing to judgment without having all the facts.

  • Dennis Horg

    Sorry I missed that class…lol
